8,000 inspirational people from around the UK will carry the Olympic Flame as it journeys across the UK. Nominated by someone they know, it will be their moment to shine, inspiring millions of people watching in their community, in the UK and worldwide.
On 8 December London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) began making conditional offers to inspiring people in the West Midlands to carry the Olympic Flame during the 70 day Olympic Torch Relay.
90% of the total 8,000 Torchbearer places across the UK have been made available to people nominated for a personal best through a number of channels, including the four public nomination campaigns run by LOCOG and the three Presenting Partners of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay: Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung. The remaining 10% of places are offered by invitation.
Each of the four campaigns focused on recognising and rewarding people with a story of personal achievement and/or contribution to the local community with the once in a lifetime opportunity of carrying the Olympic Flame.
As each Torchbearer offer is subject to individuals passing the required background checks we won’t publish the final confirmed list of West Midlands Torchbearers until March 2012 so keep checking back for more information.
We are however extremely proud to announce two inspirational women from the West Midlands who received their conditional offers on 8 Dec. They are;
Sarah Thomas, 17 from Shropshire has been a young carer for both her parents from a very early age
Moira Starkey, 84 from Herefordshire, who at the age of 83 completed her first marathon and has raised over £10,000 for a local charity through a variety of fundraising events.
