Sing your way to London 2012 with Godiva Awakes

19/07/2010

Imagineer Productions are offering the opportunity to work with BAFTA award-winning composer Ilona Sekacz in a free weekend-long singing workshop, A yard of Song, on 24 – 25 July 2010.

Part of London 2012 Open Weekend, the UK’s largest celebration of cultural, sporting and artistic activity, A yard of Song challenges the public aged 16 to 100 years who have a passion for singing no matter what their experience, to come and join in the open audition. Some of the people who attend the workshop will be selected by Ilona to form a 100 strong choir which will perform in 2012 as part of the Godiva Awakes project.

Commissioned through Artists Taking the Lead, an exciting project forming part of London 2012’s Cultural Olympiad and funded by Arts Council England, Imagineer’s Godiva Awakes, is one of 12 commissions that will be realised across the UK over the next three years, each inspired by their location and celebrating the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In July 2012, Godiva will awake to a spectacular performance involving 200 dancers, actors, aerialists, musicians, pyrotechnicians, carnivalists and young people in a procession marking the unveiling of this Lady Godiva for the modern age. Powered by 50 cyclists, Godiva will then journey to London to play a part in the London 2012 celebrations.

Ilona Sekacz said: “I hope people of all singing abilities come along to take part. The workshop will include a wide range of musical styles and vocal techniques and those chosen to form part of the Godiva Awakes choir will have a great opportunity to get involved with a project inspired by London 2012 right here in Coventry and the West Midlands.”

Kathi Hytch said: “The choir is another way in which people in the West Midlands can get involved with the Godiva Awakes project. Through Godiva Awakes we will create a once in a lifetime opportunity for people of all backgrounds to engage in an ambitious project supporting and developing the skills of a new generation of makers, performers and event producers in the region.”

The workshops will take place at Blue Coat School from 11am to 5pm on Saturday 24 July and 2pm – 5pm on Sunday 25 July. To register your interest for a place at the workshop or to find out more about the Godiva Awakes project, contact Imaginer Productions at: info@imagineerproductions.co.uk

London 2012 Open Weekend is the UK’s largest celebration of cultural, sporting and artistic activity – and this year’s theme is ‘challenge yourself’, with all participating events involving some sort of challenge for the public to try something new or take an existing interest to the next level. Open Weekend is a nationwide event that was launched in 2008 and will run in July each year up until and including 2012 when the Olympic and Paralympic Games will be staged in London. The weekend is part of nationwide celebrations to mark the two year countdown to the start of the London 2012 Games.

Imagineer Productions are working with the Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership for the 2012 Games (CW2012) to maximise opportunities arising from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. www.cswp.org.uk/london2012.
