Schools Compete for First Sir Stanley Matthews Cup

28/06/2010

Eleven schools from across Stoke-on-Trent competed in the first annual Sir Stanley Matthews Cup football tournament on Thursday 24 June.

The tournament, held at The Hardman Football Development Centre in Milton, was arranged to mark the city's 100th birthday and to encourage young people to take part in sport.

Some 110 children from years seven and eight at Mitchell, St Peters, Blurton, Birches Head, Haywood, Sandon, Berryhill, James Brindley, Brownhills, Holden Lane and Edensor high schools took part in the six-a-side competition, with each school having a squad of 10 players.

The two teams that reached the final Holden Lane, in Sneyd Green, and Edensor Technology College, in Longton, were given the chance to wear specially-made shirts, which mirrored the design of Stoke City's and Port Vale's kits from 1910, the year the six towns of Stoke-on-Trent came together to form a federation.

Both teams received a day out at either a Stoke City or Port Vale home match, with the chance to parade the trophy on the pitch at half-time

Councillor Hazel Lyth, cabinet member for adult social care, sport, leisure and culture, said: “We are looking at both the past and future by commemorating one of Stoke-on-Trent’s most famous sons and encouraging young people to take part in sport.”

“We are proud to have Sir Stan’s name on this competition to mark the centenary of the federation and it’s fitting the finalists get a day out at one of the two football clubs to mark their achievement.”
